THE National gallery

As part of a large digitalisaion project the National Gallery has been needing past exhibitions brought into real time virtual contex enabling the ablity of re visiting and presenting their history.

“The Artist’s Eye” exhibitions at the National Gallery ran from 1975 to 1987 and invited contemporary artists to curate selections from the Gallery’s collection, offering personal and often provocative perspectives

The National Gallery has recently revisited these exhibitions through its [re]curated virtual series, using digital tools to recreate and reflect on the original shows. These virtual tours include commentary from experts and offer insights into the curatorial decisions and public reception.

The Artist Eye - Richard Hamilton

Twenty one paintings of the 1972 Richard Hamilton exhibtion had to be made to scale with correct frames and postioning. Including a functioning mirror and TV on loop that had to be active pre-runtime in UnrealEngine inorder for the XR broadcast technolgy to work.  This project was in collaboration with my friends and collegs at Mind The Film.

Richard Hamilton (1978): Hamilton’s curation included works by Hieronymus Bosch and Diego Velázquez, juxtaposed with modern objects like an Eames chair, an ironing board, and a muted television. He also included his own piece, My Marilyn (1965), creating a dialogue between classical and contemporary visual culture.

The Artist Eye - David Hockney

David Hockney’s “The Artist’s Eye” exhibition at the National Gallery took place in 1981 and offered a deeply personal, playful, and visually rich interpretation of the collection, reflecting his fascination with perception, photography, and classical art

In 2024, the National Gallery launched a digital recreation of the 1981 show as part of its [Re]curated series. This virtual experience includes commentary from curators Daniel Herrmann and Susanna Avery-Quash, who explore the exhibition’s impact and Hockney’s relationship with the Gallery.

8 paintings and 2 instalations needed intergrating into the virtual recreation. The paintings again needed vairied frame designs.
